The boiler people your parents had. And theirs before that.

A family heating firm in Petersfield. Boilers, central heating, gas safety, smart controls, landlord certificates — the sort of work where the same person who quoted you fitted it and answers the phone if something’s wrong six months later.

The Hartleys

Three generations, same vans — well, same lettering.

Jim Hartley left the Royal Engineers in 1960, did his Corgi training on the side, and put a Hartley Heating ad in the back of the Petersfield Post in 1962. By the time he retired in 1989 he had three vans, two sons in the business, and the back of his garden full of old radiators.

The eldest son, John, runs the firm now. The younger, Steve, runs the install crew. John’s daughter Jamie did her Gas Safe in 2018 and is on the books as a fully qualified engineer.

Margaret — John’s wife — has answered the office phone since 1994 and she remembers who you are. If you’ve been a customer of ours longer than a year, she’ll greet you by your first name.

Recent jobs

Three calls from last week.

Plain English, real situations, real outcomes. We’ve changed the surnames; everything else is exactly as it happened.

A warm wooden kitchen interior with sunlight on the cabinets.

No hot water on the day of the school run.

Mrs T’s combi locked out at 7am on a Thursday. We were there by 9, found a stuck divertor valve, had a replacement on the van, back up by 11. Hot water in time for the after-school bath.

Worcester 4000 swap, in for breakfast, out by tea.

Mr P’s 23-year-old Glow-worm had finally given up. Worcester 4000 fitted, system power-flushed, smart Hive thermostat thrown in. Whole job done in a day, ten-year manufacturer warranty registered before we left.

— Mr Pickering, Petersfield, GU31
A cosy room with morning sunlight through a window and a wall radiator.

Mrs C’s Worcester is on its 15th annual service.

Mrs C has had us in every November since 2010. The boiler’s a 2008 Worcester 28i and it’s never given her trouble — mostly, we suspect, because she’s never missed a service. Cup of tea on, half an hour, gone.

— Mrs Cosham, Buriton, GU31
Where we work

An hour from Petersfield, in any direction.

Most days the vans don’t leave East Hampshire. For straightforward services we’ll travel further if the diary allows — but our default is to stay close enough that one of us can be there the same morning if a customer’s in trouble.
