No hot water on the day of the school run.
Mrs T’s combi locked out at 7am on a Thursday. We were there by 9, found a stuck divertor valve, had a replacement on the van, back up by 11. Hot water in time for the after-school bath.
A family heating firm in Petersfield. Boilers, central heating, gas safety, smart controls, landlord certificates — the sort of work where the same person who quoted you fitted it and answers the phone if something’s wrong six months later.
Three quick questions and we’ll tell you what’s most likely going on — and roughly what it costs. We’ll never be cross if you call instead.
Jim Hartley left the Royal Engineers in 1960, did his Corgi training on the side, and put a Hartley Heating ad in the back of the Petersfield Post in 1962. By the time he retired in 1989 he had three vans, two sons in the business, and the back of his garden full of old radiators.
The eldest son, John, runs the firm now. The younger, Steve, runs the install crew. John’s daughter Jamie did her Gas Safe in 2018 and is on the books as a fully qualified engineer.
Margaret — John’s wife — has answered the office phone since 1994 and she remembers who you are. If you’ve been a customer of ours longer than a year, she’ll greet you by your first name.
We publish what we charge because heating shouldn’t feel like ordering takeaway in the dark. Everything below is the actual figure that lands on the invoice for the average Petersfield job. Bigger or more complex work, we’ll quote properly.
Full strip-down, clean and recommission. Includes a Gas Safe certificate and a written report on the boiler’s condition.
CP12 gas safety certificate for a one-property let. Two appliances on the same property is £115 all in.
First hour on site, including diagnosis. Any parts and additional labour quoted before we start them.
Worcester Bosch 4000 series, fitted in a day, with a 10-year manufacturer warranty. Includes a full power-flush of the system.
Tado, Hive or Nest installed and paired to your boiler. Hour on site for the install, fifteen minutes walking you through the app.
MagnaCleanse process on a typical 8–12 radiator system. Removes scale and sludge from radiators, pipework and boiler exchanger.
Plain English, real situations, real outcomes. We’ve changed the surnames; everything else is exactly as it happened.

Mr P’s 23-year-old Glow-worm had finally given up. Worcester 4000 fitted, system power-flushed, smart Hive thermostat thrown in. Whole job done in a day, ten-year manufacturer warranty registered before we left.
Mrs C has had us in every November since 2010. The boiler’s a 2008 Worcester 28i and it’s never given her trouble — mostly, we suspect, because she’s never missed a service. Cup of tea on, half an hour, gone.
Most days the vans don’t leave East Hampshire. For straightforward services we’ll travel further if the diary allows — but our default is to stay close enough that one of us can be there the same morning if a customer’s in trouble.
If you ring during office hours you’ll get Margaret. After hours, the emergency line goes to whichever Hartley is on call — usually within ten minutes. For planned work, send us a note and we’ll come back the next morning at the latest.
